About the Poster

"Lifecycles of the Swallowtail Butterflies of coastal southern Queensland and northern New South Wales" is a is a full colour, laminated, 500 by 700 mm poster of the life cycles of the Swallowtail butterflies, illustrating ten beautiful butterflies from the petite and delicate to the big and bold.

The poster illustrates the full life cycle of each of the ten species from eggs through various caterpillar stages to chrysalises and the adult butterflies on a plant that the butterfly uses as a caterpillar host. If some of these plants were to be included in our gardens, we would be placing the welcome mat out for these beautiful creatures to make our gardens their home.

Seven of the species illustrated were photographed by a club member, from eggs laid in a 16 perch West End, Brisbane garden. The Four Bar Swordtail and the Macleay's Swallowtail, which have visited the West End garden were photographed from larvae donated by club members and the Mt Glorious Biological Centre.

The Richmond Birdwing lifecycle photos used in the illustration were provided by and are © to CSIRO, Double Helix Club.

Many people are not aware that each species of butterfly has its own plant or group of plants that provide the food that caterpillars need. Eventually these plump caterpillars pupate and then emerge as our beautiful butterflies. Many butterflies are becoming less common and even endangered because their host plants are disappearing from the wild. What an inspiration that is to all of us to include some of these plants in our gardens.

The poster was developed by Helen Schwencke and Lois Hughes with the help of many other club members. Lois developed the detailed design and illustrated the butterflies and host plants in a wonderful watercolour painting.

All proceeds from the sale of this poster go towards promoting butterfly gardening and conservation projects. Posters are available from the Butterfly and Other Invertebrates Club Inc.
